Los Angeles based artist S.E. Barnet makes films, videos, installations and new media works that play with the discrepancy of the actual to the expected. The interationally exhibited Barnet focuses on process, incorporating and approach that often embraces error and incongruity. She is engaged in exploring the interrelationship between technology and the construction of identity.<BR>
Barnet s work has been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The American Academy in Rome, Galerie Christine Koenig in Vienna, in de een minuten as part of the Sandberg Instituut and Nederlands Instituut voor MediaKunst Montevideo, and the Gazon Rouge Gallery in Athens. As well, she has contributed illustration and writing to three projects published by Verse Chorus Press. Recently her work was on view in the Czech Republic as part of Certain Traces: Dialogue Los Angeles/Prague 2004.<BR>Her work has been written about in Art in America, Art Forum, Art Papers as well as Horizon Zero, the on-line Banff new media journal at http://horizonzero.ca with an essay by Sylvie Parent, the Green Museum on-line http://moisture.greenmuseum.org and media@terra microMuseum.<BR>She has received various grants and awards including a Durfee ARC grant, the Long Beach Museum of Art s 1999 New Vision s Video Production Grant,the Panavision Young Filmmakers Award and, as part of the MOISTURE collective, a LEF Arts Foundation grant and a Beall Center for the Arts grant. Her collaborative project Mario s Furniture iwth Hillary Mushkin was recently in residence at the Bolsky Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design and is currently in residence at the Armory Center for the Arts.<BR>Barnet has organized three programs for the Los Angeles FilmForum. She has curated for LA Freewaves and a program of one minute videos from Los Angeles for the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam.<BR>S.E. Barnet teaches video at the UCLA and heads the video department for Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design where she is an Assistant Professor.
